Amite County Jail Release Routes
The Amite County Sheriff's Department operates the county detention function. Its official page says the sheriff supervises jailers and that jailers maintain booking information, collect fines and bonds, arrange medical care, monitor visits and security, and keep order. That statement supports the existence of a sheriff-held booking trail. It does not establish an online roster, an automatic public release list, or a public gate-out counter. No official roster, recent-release archive, release hour, capacity, property process, or release entrance was verified during the county research.
Leaving Amite County Jail can end in several places. Bond, recognizance, dismissal, time served, completion of a local sentence, or another court order may put a person back in the community. A departure can instead be a transfer to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, another county jail, the U.S. Marshals Service, or immigration custody. The sheriff's actual release entry should identify the date, time, reason, authority, and destination when those fields are releasable. If the entry says transfer, the receiving agency becomes the next custodian to check.
Confirm an Amite Jail Release
A focused sequence avoids the most common false conclusion. First identify the booked person carefully, using the full booked name and booking number when known. Then contact the Sheriff's Department and ask whether the person remains in Amite custody. If not, ask whether the booking record gives an actual release date and whether the disposition was community release or transfer. Staff may limit what they disclose by telephone, so preserve the request in writing when a durable record is needed.
- Call the sheriff at 601-657-8057 and ask about current Amite custody, the actual release entry, and any receiving agency.
- Send a narrow written request by email or mail for the booking and release fields tied to the named event.
- Review the court order or disposition to learn what legal action authorized release, bond, sentence, dismissal, or transfer.
- Check MS SAVIN or VINELink for a reported custody change, after confirming live Amite participation.
- When the record identifies a transfer, confirm intake with MDOC, another sheriff, USMS/BOP, or ICE.
The court trail supports the jail record but does not replace it. Amite Justice Court begins felony matters and holds jail sessions three times each week. Circuit Court preserves later indictments, motions, judgments, sentences, and dispositions. A signed order may make release lawful, yet it does not show when jail staff completed physical release. For a complete county search and records workflow, use the Amite County released-inmate search.
Note: Ask the receiving authority to confirm intake before describing an Amite County Jail departure as a community release.
Amite Jail Release Record Requests
Direct a written request to the Amite County Sheriff's Department. State the person's full booked name, an appropriate date of birth or booking number, and the approximate booking dates. Then name the exact items sought. Useful fields include booking date and time, actual release date and time, release disposition or mechanism, releasing authority, receiving agency or destination, and the booking photograph as a separate item. These are fields to request, not a claim that every field appears in the sheriff's public schema.
Ask for an electronic copy, releasable portions of any partly exempt record, and an itemized fee estimate before work begins. No county sheriff form, fee schedule, named records officer, processing hours, or promised delivery method was found. Mississippi's Public Records Act allows a public body to use reasonable written procedures. When no procedure exists, the statute addresses access within one working day; an adopted procedure generally cannot push production or denial beyond seven working days, with a written explanation and up to fourteen working days in the stated circumstances. A denial must identify the exemption.
| Requested item | What it can establish |
|---|---|
| Actual release date and time | When county custody ended for that booking event |
| Release mechanism | Bond, time served, order, sentence completion, or another recorded basis |
| Releasing authority | The court or legal authority tied to the change |
| Destination or receiving agency | Community release versus transfer to another custodian |
| Booking photograph | The image associated with the county booking, if separately releasable |
Medical details, victim information, juvenile files, active investigative material, sealed or expunged matters, and unrelated identifiers may be restricted. Narrow wording reduces review work and privacy conflict. Online disappearance is also not the same as lawful record destruction. Mississippi archival schedules govern local records, but the research did not verify an exact retention period for an Amite release record. Ask which approved record series applies.
Amite County Jail Contact Record
The verified sheriff contact is a mailing address, not a confirmed street entrance for the jail. Commercial pages assign a street address that the state officially uses for the local probation and parole office. That conflict is why the unverified location should not be repeated as the jail entrance, release exit, or property counter. The county also publishes no records-counter hours. The fact that jailers and dispatchers are on duty around the clock does not mean public-record staff, release inquiries, or property service operate on that schedule.

The official Amite County sheriff page is the source for this contact and the jailer-duty statement. Use the phone for a time-sensitive custody question and email or mail for a record request. Do not infer a public visit address, gate, counter, or hour from the mailing address. A court clerk, MDOC Records, or a federal agency should receive a request only for records that office actually created.
Amite Jail Records by Custodian
Each record has a proper owner. The sheriff is the best source for booking, physical county release, and transfer destination. Justice Court can document initial appearance and bond-related action. Circuit Court can document a felony judgment, sentence, probation, dismissal, or later violation. MDOC handles state intake, sentence computation, prison location, parole, Earned Release Supervision, and discharge. Federal court, USMS, BOP, and ICE each control separate parts of a federal or immigration route.
- Release
- The end of one agency's physical custody, which may be into the community or to another custodian.
- Transfer
- Movement from Amite County Jail to another agency or facility, not community freedom.
- Discharge
- Completion or termination of the relevant sentence or supervisory relationship.
- Detainer
- A request or legal basis for another authority to take or hold the person after the first custody ends.
MS SAVIN and VINELink add a useful notification layer. Mississippi covers MDOC offenders and participating county jails, and listed events include release, transfer, escape, abscond supervision, and return to custody. The event reflects an agency update and may generate more than one notice. Live Amite participation still must be confirmed. Treat an alert as a prompt to check the sheriff record, especially when the difference between transfer and community release matters.
Note: A court disposition explains legal authority, while the sheriff's release entry records when Amite County custody actually changed.
After an Amite Jail Detainer
Release from Amite County Jail can be delivery to another authority. A state sentence may lead to MDOC intake anywhere in Mississippi because no state prison was verified in Amite County. A pending federal case may place the person with USMS in contracted space, while a sentenced federal prisoner may enter BOP. An immigration detainer or other process can lead to ICE custody. None of these moves should be called an Amite community release without the receiving record.
When state transfer is named, search MDOC by name or MDOC ID and read location, unit, location-change date, sentence data, and the field labeled Tentative Release Date together. For federal custody, use the BOP locator after commitment and the federal docket or USMS before that stage. For immigration custody, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator with the available A-number and country of birth or live biographical fields. A missing locator result is not proof that every custody ended.
This is the distinctive Amite release issue: one custodian may use the word release while another immediately receives the person. BOP likewise warns that “Not in BOP Custody” can coexist with another justice system or supervision. ICE's locator is aimed at current or recent custody, not a full historical archive. Keep the sheriff's destination field, the receiving agency's intake or locator result, and the court order together before stating where the person went.
Verify Amite Community Release
Community presence does not always mean the sentence has fully ended. A person may be on probation after a court order, on parole after conditional release from a state sentence, or on Earned Release Supervision while MDOC jurisdiction continues. The Amite Probation & Parole Office is a community-corrections office, not a jail. Its role can confirm a supervision route but cannot supply the county jail's original gate-out time.
For an MDOC case, compare the Inmate Search with the Parolee Search and contact MDOC Records if the public record is absent or unclear. A tentative date is a forecast. A location change may be movement within the state system. The discharge certificate and MDOC Records provide stronger final proof of actual state discharge. For a county-only event, return to the sheriff booking record and court disposition. Those are the two sources closest to what happened in Amite County.
Identity checks remain vital. Match an official number when one exists, and compare date of birth, case, county, and sentence details. Do not rely on a name or photograph alone. If records conflict, ask the agency that created the disputed fact: sheriff for gate-out, court for order, MDOC for state computation, supervision office for current reporting, and receiving agency for post-transfer custody.
